Service - To Be Truly Helpful

In Twelve Step programs service to others is an important, if not necessary part of our recovery. Why? because we focus so much on ourselves that we forget about others. The wonderful thing is, when we really look closely, we find we all share the same basic wants, needs, and values, and can find ways to fulfill them together for the good of all. I find this to be a great comfort at work when I seem to be spinning my wheels. I remember that any small thing that is helpful is worthwhile. All I need do is look for the next best thing to do great or small. It doesn't have to be very big or profitable to be of value. Even if it is just a kindness like listening or talking with someone who needs it, it is important, it is God's work. I answer the phone at work, "How can I help you?" It helps remind me of why I am here and not to stress out if time spent doesn't appear to be "productive." I simply ask myself, is this helpful? If so, that is enough.

This is a great "test" to assess our actions and impulses.

I will strive to look more closely to find the closest "next best thing to do". Thank you for reaching out with your thoughts. I find them helpful.
